Like many of the Baby Boomer featured in this video from Over 50 and Out of Work, we also saw the worst of the Great Recession in terms of personal job losses, in terms of the difficulty of finding another job, and in the increasingly negative stereotypes about people who have passed their 40th birthday. Like many other Boomers, we were not ready to retire. With current skills, advanced degrees in our respective fields, with experience as leaders and achievers who were rewarded and promoted into positions of power and influence, we still found it very difficult to find new jobs that looked anything like our old ones in terms of position, responsibilities, or wages. Like so many others, we contributed in meaningful ways until job losses pushed us to the sidelines. For all too many, the sin of getting older has swept them away in a massive head count purge during this economic crisis. Many "perfect candidates" on paper witness the shoulder drop and change of expression as they arrive for interviews. All too many Baby Boomers now struggle to secure adequate employment. Yet marketer's love Boomers because of our purchasing power. Statistics show that Boomer households spend an average of $10,000 more each year than any other age group. No wonder companies love Boomers in the Marketing Department. The only surprise is that they think Boomer buying habits are sustainable when Boomers are disdained by their HR Departments. Such companies make a terrible miscalculation for their profits and for our economy. While unemployment for any group is devastating, long-term and pervasive Boomer joblessness negatively impacts the discretionary spending habits of the largest, most consistent group of uber spenders in the marketplace. It seems that business leaders should be able to see the connection between millions of jobless Boomers and reduced profitability. Yet every day far too many well- qualified, highly educated, smart, and loyal Boomers continue to struggle with long-term unemployment while businesses rue the lack of buyers for their products. We believe that Boomers can create the change that we need by actively seeking out and supporting companies that actively recruit and hire Boomers, that produce products or provide services that are relevant, necessary and desired by Boomers. We call such companies, products and services "Boomer Friendly". What if millions of Baby Boomers supported their local Boomer Entrepreneurs and other Boomer Friendly businesses so they can survive, thrive, and grow to create more jobs? myboomer2boomer will highlight Boomer Friendly businesses so you can support them with your buying power. Money is the lifeblood of any business. They need it, Boomers have it. But if no one will hire Boomers, it won't be long and Boomers will have nothing left. So spend smarter. Ask the question wherever you shop: "Are you Boomer Friendly?" You might not like the answer - yet. But if you don't ask, they won't understand that Boomers mean business - in more ways than one. |
